lake michigan lighthouses

Lake Michigan Lighthouses in the Fall

Of course, Lake Michigan’s lighthouses are pretty in the summer, but once fall comes around they are even more beautiful, when the water becomes a bit wilder with changing weather patterns.

The frothy whitecaps are whipped up by the wind, and it’s so picturesque to see the waves as they crash around the lighthouses.

From southwest Michigan’s St. Joseph Pierhead Lights to Grand Traverse Bay, Harbor Springs, and beyond, the Lake Michigan lighthouses (many are historical sites) are a great way to experience Michigan fall fun.

You can read more about them here and use the Lake Michigan Lighthouse Map to plan your trip.

Lake Huron Travel Guide

Lake Huron Lighthouses to Visit in the Fall

Lake Huron’s coast is also dotted with historic lighthouses that have stood as beacons in the night for many years, guiding ships to safety in rough waters.

Autumn is the perfect time to visit them, too. From the Round Island Light off the coasts of Mackinac Island and Mackinaw City and down to Fort Gratiot Lighthouse in Port Huron near Lexington, MI, you’ll find more than enough lighthouses to fill a scenic fall getaway.

We recommend visiting Alpena, where you’ll find seven lighthouses in the area to check out.

You’ll also want to explore the beautiful grounds of the Tawas Point Lighthouse in East Tawas, and the Pointe Aux Barques Lighthouse near Port Austin.
