Whether you’re looking for a fun festival, a day trip or a weekend getaway, here are some suggestions fo fun things to do in May:

Take A Michigan Road Trip
Visit Mackinac Island Without All of the Crowds
This is my favorite time of year to visit Mackinac, a charming island located in Lake Huron. Always a popular travel destination, I think May is the perfect time to explore when you can experience the beauty of the island without the crowds of tourists.
There are no cars allowed on the island, so visitors can enjoy the serene beauty of the island by bike or horse-drawn carriage, or my favorite a long hike on foot! Be sure to sample to fudge at one of the many fudge shops and pick your favorite. Stop by Little Luxuries of Mackinac, one of my favorite spots to shop when I’m on the island!
Explore Michigan’s Beaches
I’m sure you’ll agree that Michigan has some of the best beaches in the country. With more than 3,000 miles of coastline, you’ll find a variety of beaches and May is the perfect time to visit them.
Some of the most popular beaches include Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore in northern Michigan, Warren Dunes State Park in southwest Michihgan and Port Crescent State Park in Port Austin at the tip of the Thumb region.
Attend a Michigan Festival
Michigan is one of the biggest “Festival States,” May is a popular month for festivals. Some of the most popular festivals include the Tulip Time Festival in Holland, and the Movement Electronic Music Fest in Detroit. Take a Wineries Tour
Michigan is known for its award-winning wineries, and May is a great time to tour Michigan wineries with friends. Some popular wine regions include the Lake Michigan Shore Wine Trail southwest Michigan, and the wineries in the Traverse City area.
Take a Hike
Michigan has an abundance of hiking trails from the Lower Peninsula to the Upper Peninsula. You’ll find West Michigan trails that offer a mix of paved and unpaved hiking trails, and rugged trails like those in Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park and Isle Royale National Park. May is a great time to explore the trails in Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, too, before the summer tourists arrive.
One of the most popular things to do in Michigan in May is visiting the Tulip Time Festival in Holland to see all of the colorful tulips. You’ll see more than five millions tulips blooming throughout the city.
