St. Joseph Beaches: 7 Best Lake Michigan Beaches Guide
Last Updated: April 2026
St. Joseph beaches are the heart of the Riviera of the Midwest — seven Lake Michigan beaches within 20 minutes of downtown, ranging from the big, amenity-rich Silver Beach at the mouth of the St. Joseph River to the quiet dune-and-solitude feel of Grand Mere State Park. This is a local’s breakdown of which one fits which kind of day, with the address, parking fee, accessibility, and dog policy for each.

I’ve been coming to St. Joseph for years and have covered the southwest Michigan coast on segments for FOX 17 West Michigan and WDIV Detroit. The rankings and notes below come from that, plus current verified details from Berrien County Parks, Michigan DNR, and each city’s parks department. For the full St. Joseph trip — hotels, restaurants, itineraries — start with my St. Joseph Michigan travel guide.

7 Best Beaches in St. Joseph Michigan
1. Silver Beach County Park
Silver Beach is the main event — 2,450 feet of Lake Michigan shoreline at the mouth of the St. Joseph River, with about 1,600 feet of designated swim area and lifeguards on duty from early June through mid-August. It’s the most amenity-dense beach in the region: the Silver Beach Carousel and Whirlpool Compass Fountain splash pad are a short walk up the bluff, the paved walkways and free beach wheelchairs make it the most accessible beach on this list, and parking ($8 Berrien County / $15 non-resident, May–October) sits steps from the sand. Arrive by mid-morning on summer weekends; the 600-space lot fills. The full deep-dive is in my complete Silver Beach guide.

- ♿ Accessibility: Free beach wheelchairs, barrier-free walkways
- 🐕 Dog policy: Not allowed on sand; leashed dogs on sidewalks and pier

2. Tiscornia Park
Tiscornia sits on the north side of the river directly across from Silver Beach, and it’s where you go for the North Pier lighthouses. The sixteen-acre park has a wide swath of Lake Michigan sand, sandy hiking trails through the dunes, restrooms, and picnic facilities — and it’s typically noticeably less crowded than Silver Beach even in peak summer. The North Pier walk to the twin 1907 lighthouses is about a quarter-mile each way; in January and February the lights freeze into dramatic ice sculptures that draw photographers from across the Midwest.

3. Jean Klock Park
Technically in Benton Harbor — just across the river from St. Joseph — Jean Klock Park has about 2,950 feet of shoreline, tall dunes, and noticeably more breathing room than Silver Beach. John Nellis Klock gifted the park to the city of Benton Harbor in 1917 in memory of his daughter Jean, making it one of the oldest public parks in Michigan. Amenities include an observation tower, volleyball courts, a playground, a concession area, a bathhouse, a pavilion, and an ADA-accessible boardwalk. It’s the most under-visited of the big St. Joseph-area beaches given what you get.

4. Lions Park Beach
Lions Park is the smaller family pick south of Silver Beach with a lighthouse-themed playground that younger kids love. It’s the right choice if you’re traveling with pre-school or early-elementary kids who want a shorter stretch of sand, a playground right next to the water, picnic tables, and restrooms — all without the full crowd and parking dynamic of Silver Beach a few minutes north.

- ♿ Accessibility: ADA-accessible cement pathway
5. Rocky Gap County Park
Rocky Gap is a Berrien County Park with 1,100 feet of Lake Michigan beach frontage on the north side of Benton Harbor, and it’s the quiet-sunset pick of the seven. The upper park has an overlook deck with a pergola that gives you a bluff-level panoramic view of Lake Michigan; the lower park has the beach access ramp, picnic tables, restrooms, and a shade shelter. Dogs are not allowed on the beach at Rocky Gap — only in the parking lot with a 6-foot leash.

6. Grand Mere State Park
Grand Mere is the dog-friendly dune-and-solitude pick, fifteen minutes south of downtown St. Joseph in Stevensville. It was designated a National Natural Landmark in 1968 and covers nearly 985 acres of sand dunes, hardwood forest, and three geologically ancient inland lakes left behind by glaciers. The beach is a mile of Lake Michigan shoreline accessed via a sandy hike over the dunes — getting there is genuinely a workout, which is part of why the beach stays uncrowded. Leashed dogs (6-foot maximum) are allowed on the entire shoreline and swim area. A free-to-borrow track chair extends access beyond traditional wheelchairs.

- 🐕 Dog policy: Leashed dogs (6-foot max) allowed on the entire Lake Michigan shoreline and swim area

7. Warren Dunes State Park
Warren Dunes is twenty minutes south of downtown St. Joseph in Sawyer, and it’s the biggest beach day on this list — three miles of Lake Michigan shoreline and sand dunes that rise up to 260 feet. It’s worth a dedicated half-day: climb the dunes, drop down to the beach, swim, picnic, or hike the six miles of trails. Two free beach wheelchairs are available to use, and dogs are allowed on the trails, in the campground, and on the beach north of the northernmost swim buoy — about 2.5 miles of pet-friendly shoreline. More detail in my Warren Dunes guide.

- 🐕 Dog policy: Allowed on trails, in the campground, and on the beach north of the northernmost swim buoy (2.5 miles of shoreline)

Accessible and ADA St. Joseph Beaches
St. Joseph does accessibility better than most Lake Michigan beach towns. All seven beaches on this list offer some form of ADA or wheelchair accessibility — from paved pathways to free-to-borrow beach wheelchairs. Here’s the breakdown:
- Silver Beach — free beach wheelchairs; barrier-free walkways from the parking lot to the water; Silver Beach Carousel’s Serpent Chariot is wheelchair-accessible
- Warren Dunes State Park — two free beach wheelchairs available for use
- Grand Mere State Park — half-mile paved, wheelchair-accessible Nature Trail; free-to-borrow track chair for beyond-traditional-wheelchair access on sandy terrain
- Jean Klock Park — ADA-accessible boardwalk; paved parking adjacent to the beach
- Tiscornia Park — ADA-accessible sidewalk to the beach (the North Pier walk itself is not wheelchair-accessible)
- Lions Park Beach — ADA-accessible cement pathway
- Rocky Gap County Park — hard-surface beach access ramp
For beach wheelchair availability, Silver Beach and Warren Dunes are your two strongest options. More on accessibility across Michigan in my Michigan ADA-accessible beaches guide.

Dog-Friendly St. Joseph Beaches
Dog policies vary sharply across the seven St. Joseph beaches, so this matters to know before you pack the car. Two beaches are genuinely dog-friendly on the sand — the rest either restrict dogs to sidewalks and parking lots, or don’t allow dogs at all.
Grand Mere State Park (Best Overall for Dogs)
Leashed dogs (6-foot maximum) are welcome on the entire one-mile Lake Michigan shoreline and in the swim area. This is the top dog-friendly beach in the St. Joseph cluster.
Warren Dunes State Park (Best for Longer Shoreline Access)
Dogs allowed in the campground, on trails, and on the beach north of the northernmost swim buoy — about 2.5 miles of Lake Michigan shoreline. Not permitted in the main swim area.
Silver Beach (Limited)
Dogs are not allowed on the Silver Beach sand. Leashed dogs are welcome on sidewalks, paved paths, and the South Pier.
Rocky Gap (Parking Lot Only)
Dogs on a 6-foot leash are permitted in the parking lot only. Not allowed on the beach.
