About the Cheeseburger in Caseville Festival

It all started with Jimmy Buffett’s signature song “Cheeseburger in Paradise” — an ode to his love of cheeseburgers and a dream of eating them in a tropical setting. Inspired by Buffett’s music and carefree attitude, the Cheeseburger in Caseville Festival began in 1999 as a way to wrap up summer while drawing visitors to the little town of 800 year-round residents.

Now 27 years later, thousands flock to the shores of Saginaw Bay each August for what Buffett called “a celebration of life and the cruise we are making through it.” Caseville has even earned the nickname “Key North” — an homage to Key West. What started as a 3-day local event has grown into a full 10-day festival drawing visitors from across the Midwest.

Getting There and Parking

Caseville is located at the base of Michigan’s Thumb, about 20 minutes west of Port Austin on M-25. Parking is available throughout the city, but Caseville is a small town and spots fill fast on weekends and especially on Parade night (the Wednesday of festival week). The Thumb Area Transit shuttle is the better option for Parade night — it costs around $3 per ride and stops at Port Crescent State Park, Oak Beach County Park, Sleeper State Park, and the Caseville County Park amphitheatre. The shuttle typically runs from 3pm until midnight. Confirm 2026 shuttle schedule at tatbus.com.

Festival Admission — Buttons and Wristbands

Almost all festival events are free. The exception is the concert amphitheatre at Caseville County Park, which requires either a day wristband ($10, good for one night) or a festival button ($25, good for all 9 nights of live music in the park). Both are available at local businesses throughout Caseville. The money collected from button sales supports the festival directly.

The Parade of Tropical Fools

The Parade of Tropical Fools is the centerpiece of the whole festival — held on the Wednesday evening of festival week, starting at 5:30pm and winding through town for about 90 minutes. In 2026 that falls on Wednesday, August 19. Over 70,000 people line the streets to catch beads, candy, frisbees, and other throws from the parade floats. The tropical costumes are half the show — grass skirts, cheeseburger hats, flamingos, and full pirate gear are standard. Get there early to claim your spot on the parade route and bring a bag for the throws.

Signature Festival Events Worth Planning Around

While the full 2026 daily schedule will be announced by the Chamber closer to the festival, these are the signature recurring events that return every year and are worth building your days around:

Parade of Tropical Fools

Wednesday evening of festival week (August 19, 2026). The main event. 5:30pm start, 90 minutes through downtown. 70,000+ spectators. Wear your tropical costume.

Annual Cheeseburger Photo Contest

Submit your best cheeseburger-themed photo by email to the Caseville Chamber of Commerce or drop off at the Chamber Office (6632 Main St) throughout the festival for a chance to win. Winners announced closing day.

Sandcastle Building Contest

Held each weekend of the festival on the beach at Caseville County Park. Worth watching even if you’re not competing — the sand architecture gets genuinely impressive.

Cardboard Boat Race

One of the most reliably entertaining events of the week — creative cardboard boat designs race toward the finish line with varying degrees of success. Free to watch.

Cheeseburger Eating Contest

Held on Wednesday of festival week, entry fee required. The 2024 festival saw the long-standing consumption record broken — expect competitive eating to be taken seriously here.

Cheeseburger Fun Run — 5K

Held the first Saturday of the festival. Pre-register before the festival for the best rate. Race winds through downtown Caseville including a stretch along the Saginaw Bay breakwall.

Annual Best Dressed Business Contest

Caseville businesses compete to out-decorate each other for the festival — winner determined by public vote. The window displays and storefronts alone are worth a walk through downtown.

Family Events Running Daily

Daily through the festival: kayak and paddleboard lessons and sessions at Caseville County Beach (register at Thumbs Up Kiteboarding, 989-856-3333), sidewalk chalk, glitter tattoos, the Cheeseburger Museum “What Is It?” contest, and duck race tickets available at the Chamber Office for the closing day Great Duck Race.

Live Music Venues — Daily

Music runs throughout the festival at multiple locations: the County Park Amphitheatre (button or wristband required), Thumb Brewery, Beachy’s outdoor stage, Dufty’s Blue Water Inn, and various pop-up locations throughout town. The amphitheatre runs from evening until 10:30pm most nights; other venues run noon through late evening.

Where to Stay During the Cheeseburger Festival

Festival week accommodations in Caseville go fast — book as early as possible. Caseville County Park beachfront campsites are the most in-demand option and reservations open December 1 at huroncountyparks.com. Albert E. Sleeper State Park (camping and mini cabins) and Oak Beach County Park are good backup campground options with shuttle stops. For private vacation rentals, search Airbnb or VRBO filtered to Caseville or “Sand Point Michigan” — many waterfront properties sit on Saginaw Bay. The Bella Vista Inn and Sunset Bay Resort (book here) is the main hotel option in town with private beach access and pools. Festival-week overflow camping is also available at the Caseville Fire Hall — contact the Chamber for details.

Tips for Attending the Cheeseburger Festival

  • Buy the $25 festival button rather than nightly $10 wristbands if you’re staying more than two nights — it covers all 9 concert evenings at the amphitheatre
  • Arrive early for Parade night — street spots fill hours before the 5:30pm start on Wednesday. The shuttle is the smarter option for Parade night
  • Book camping December 1 — Caseville County Park beachfront sites are gone within hours of reservations opening for festival week
  • Dress the part — grass skirts, tropical shirts, flamingo headgear, and cheeseburger costumes are standard. The more committed your outfit, the better your parade experience
  • Bring cash — many of the smaller vendors, contest entry fees, and food stands at the festival are cash only
  • Plan around the shuttle for Parade night and late concert evenings — parking in Caseville during peak festival nights is genuinely difficult

  4. Steve Marshall says:

I kind of miss the old cheeseburger days. I am one of the big trailer owners that used to be in the park. At least until the county decided to charge us $4,000.00 a year and then decided to kick us out after supporting you and your town from the very earliest days. I truly wish you nothing but misery and financial ruin.

    1. Hey Steve, While we appreciate your kind wishes regarding financial ruin, we are actually a travel information website- not Caseville Township. You migt consider taking up your issues with them. Wishing you the very best.

  5. Kris Gattler says:

Your article here states $8/day $15 for the 10 days, admission to the festival. The Caseville chamber of commerce is saying $10/day and $25 for the 10 day event, can you verify which is correct?

    1. Hi Kris, Thanks for reaching out. The prices for 2025 have been updated on on our guide for 2025. The price of the tickets for 2025 are $10 a day of $25 for 9 days of music in the park. Hope this helps.

  6. David Addy says:

Talk to any local that actually lives in Caseville, besides the handful of millionaires that control and force their agaenda with no oversight upon this town, and they will tell you that; A. This is not a family friendly event but a drunkfest with open alcohol everywhere and not enough police to curtail the massive influx of drugs and violence B. Crime escalates to epic proportions (it is not safe after dark) C. This does not benefit the community outside of the businesses on Main Street who’s sole purpose is to fleece all vacationers of their last penny overcharging for every amenity.
I am a sole proprioter business owner myself serving the Caseville community since 1999 and the negative effects of this festival are felt far and wide even after the last overpriced cheesburger is consumed. I refuse to support this greedy tourist trap of a town and neither should you..

    1. Hi and thanks for reaching out! Thanks for sharing your perspective — I always appreciate hearing from locals, since your experience is such an important part of the bigger picture. Large events like the Caseville Cheeseburger Festival can feel very different depending on whether you’re a visitor or a year-round resident.

My guide is based on attending the festival and gathering feedback from a variety of sources, including families who come back year after year for the fun, music, and community atmosphere. That said, I understand that big crowds and busy weekends aren’t for everyone, and I encourage anyone considering a visit to decide what type of experience they’re looking for.

The beauty of Michigan is that there’s something here for every style of traveler — from high-energy festivals to quiet lakeshore escapes — and my goal is to share all of those options so readers can choose the trip that’s right for them.
