Tips for the Perfect Tree Farm Visit

What to Bring

  • Warm layers, gloves, and waterproof boots – Michigan December = cold and potentially muddy
  • Measuring tape – Know your ceiling height! Nothing worse than getting home to find your tree is too tall
  • Saw (if needed) – Most farms provide saws, but call ahead
  • Rope or bungee cords – For securing your tree to the car
  • Blanket or tarp – To protect your car interior
  • Cash – Some farms prefer cash
  • Camera – Document the memories!

Best Time to Go

Opening Weekend (day after Thanksgiving): Most farms open, but can be crowded
First Weekend of December: My personal favorite – good selection, not overwhelming
Weekdays: Much less crowded if you can swing it
Early in Season: Best selection of u-cut trees

Choosing the Right Tree

Fraser Fir: Most popular, excellent needle retention, great scent
Balsam Fir: Traditional Christmas scent, good needle retention
Douglas Fir: Full branches, citrus scent, good for heavy ornaments
Blue Spruce: Beautiful blue-green color, stiff branches
Scotch Pine: Good needle retention, affordable, holds ornaments well

Making it Last

  • Fresh cut the bottom – Have the farm do this, or recut at home within 4 hours
  • Water immediately – Trees drink a LOT the first 24 hours
  • Keep it watered – Check daily, don’t let the water level drop below the base
  • Keep away from heat – No fireplaces, heating vents, or direct sunlight

Why I Love Michigan Christmas Tree Farms

After years of getting our tree from farms across Michigan, I can honestly say it’s one of our family’s most cherished traditions. Yes, it’s colder than going to a parking lot. Yes, it takes more time. And yes, sometimes we end up with sap on our gloves and needles in the car.

But the memories? They’re priceless. Watching my kids run through rows of trees, arguing over which one is “perfect,” warming up with hot cocoa, and riding in a wagon through snowy fields – these are the moments that make Michigan Christmases magical.

Plus, you’re supporting Michigan farmers and getting a fresher tree than you’d ever find at a big box store. Our trees last for weeks when properly cared for, and the house smells amazing!
