From chocolate mustaches to dark chocolate cran-pecan bark, there’s an abundance of deliciousness waiting for you at Doncker’s. And it’s all the sweeter knowing that Doncker’s cares for the Upper Peninsula they call home, using renewable energy and sustainable packaging.

We really can say their U.P.-shaped chocolate bars are made with love.

Opened in 1906, this Escanaba chocolate shop is worth a visit! Their hand-dipped chocolates are still made according to family recipe, and they have sugar- and salt-free options too.

Some of Sayklly’s all-star confections include a 10-lb chocolate bar, and their caramel pecan snappies (including a huge version called the Whopper Snappie!).

Even if you can’t make it to Sayklly’s in person, they were featured on “Unwrapped”, a Food Network show that brings you behind the scenes of food production. No matter where you are in Michigan, you can still see how they make some of the state’s best chocolate.

If you love chocolate but have dietary restrictions, this is the place. (Or if you just generally love chocolate.) St. Johns’ Oh MI is one of the top 15 chocolatiers in the state and everything they make is free of nuts, soy, gluten, and dairy, as well as having order-ahead vegan options.

Almost 50 flavors of chocolate can be found in the store at any time, and one of the many reasons to come back is to see what flavors rotate in. Oh MI has made more than 180 flavors since opening in 2016!

Of those 180, we can’t not mention Oh MI’s flavor-changing chocolate. Their Neapolitan shifts between strawberry, milk chocolate, and vanilla, taking your taste buds on a wildly delicious ride.

If we had to pick just one word to describe Grand Rapid’s Mokaya, it would be ‘pure’. From the preservative- and artificial flavor-free chocolate that is ethically and sustainably sourced, to the small-batch in-house hand-crafted treats, to the pure artistry of their creations.

And, it goes without saying, Mokaya makes pure deliciousness! Flavors include hazelnut cream, mint mocha, toasted coconut mango black sesame, and pineapple Tajín dark chocolate. Also available are confections made with wine, spirits, or Michigan craft beer.

They proudly sell everything from caramel corn to bear’s paws to chocolate-covered krispies, and their chocolate is preservative-free. Besides this, they contribute to local charities, which definitely counts as making their community sweeter.

Make sure to grab a sample of their Snowbirds—their trademarked creation of white chocolate and Georgia pecans. If you buy the “Flock of Birds” assortment, you can try a Snowbird in dark chocolate as well.

It’s worth getting several Snowbirds, since they’ll disappear quicker than a swallow heading south for the winter.

Another thing that makes Kilwin’s one of the top 15 chocolatiers in Michigan is the opportunity to take a tour of their kitchen. With large windows and descriptions of their treats’ production, you can really see how your favorite confections come to be.

Tours are self-guided, so you can stare at the fudge-making slabs as long as you want, seven days a week.

My special recommendations include anything from their Sea Salt Collection. There are sea foams, chocolate caramels, and nut clusters, crafted with sea salts from around the world.

If you’re looking for caramels, truffles, fudge, toffee, barks or caramel corn, Kilwin’s has something for you. They even have no sugar added and sugar-free options!

Though Kilwin’s is a nation-wide chocolatier, their roots are deep in Michigan, having begun in downtown Petoskey. They’re beloved for their 75+ creations, made with tradition and pride.

Village Chocolatier makes their goodies in-house, and from the storefront you can see some of the tables where they do it. Afterwards, you can stroll down to the pier while eating up some amazing Michigan chocolate.

They have a wide selection of confections like chocolate-covered cherries, seafoam, peanut butter cups, and of course the mega chocolate caramel apple.

Their dark chocolate English toffee is one of the best I’ve had, and I’ve had a lot of English toffee! It’s just so buttery and nutty and crunchy.

Okay, confession time: while all the chocolate shops on this list are amazing, Village Chocolatier in East Tawas holds a special place in my heart. As someone who’s spent a lot of time in the Tawas area, I’ve also spent a lot of time eating their chocolate.

For all our confection traditionalists, Alpine Chocolat House features barks and brittles and fudges (oh my!), as well as caramel apples that you can get emblazoned with a Spartan or Wolverine logo.

In downtown Gaylord you can enjoy inventions like smores crunch (chocolate, Golden Grahams, and marshmallows all mixed up), ghost pepper caramel corn, or a joy bar (pretzels, caramel and oodles of chocolate).

What’s more, Ryba’s offers a vegan fudge that sounds so good, you might not even miss the original. Every flavor except Oreo is gluten-free, and if you want to have fudge with breakfast, you can: Ryba’s sells fudge-flavored coffee.

Ryba’s chocolate fudge is anything but plain. It is so creamy and just melts in your mouth. That’s not the only option, though—depending on the season, Ryba’s has up to 21 flavors, some of which are available in half-size slices.

We all know that Mackinac Island is literally famous for its fudge, so it’s no surprise that pretty much every shop on the island claims to be the best. But my personal favorite is Ryba’s.

Amazing Chocolate Shops in Michigan’s Thumb

Located inside Port Huron’s Wrigley Center, Dot’s Candy Bar is quite the find. Not only do they have staples like chocolate-covered strawberries (some of them decorated like tuxedos!), but Dot’s also features chocolate suckers, and innovations like their white chocolate cardamom rose bark.

Sugar-free options are available too, as is a vegan or dairy/gluten-free cashew cluster. Dot’s goes beyond chocolates to tempt us with some mind-blowing baked goods. You can order a key lime madeleine, a caramel macchiato muffin, a bacon gruyere scone, a saffron bun, or something equally incredible.

If I were Canadian, I’d cross the bridge for this.

Bon Bon Bon is the place to be if you want some downright-delightful sweets. Made with any of seven different kinds of chocolate, Hamtramck’s Bon Bon Bon take creativity seriously. Seriously fun, that is.

You can go traditional (the Dark “Up” is made of dark chocolate prepared four different ways), fun (Lemon Bar None, Coffee & Donuts), daring (Better Butter Crunch has potato chips, and Lil Hottie includes cayenne and paprika), or mature (the caramel in Mustachio is made with Moscato).

Vegan, nut-avoidant, and gluten-avoidant options abound, such as their vegan Dark Smooth Album, which is chocolate shaped like a vinyl record.

The whimsy continues: there’s also a triceratops-shaped chocolate, and a mixtape made of white, milk, and dark chocolates. Daytrip to Detroit, anyone?
