Best Restaurants in Traverse City, MI

Welcome to Traverse City (TC for short)! While there are almost endless things to do in this Northern Michigan city, one of the most important things when visiting is figuring out where you’ll eat.

From fun dining spots in downtown Traverse City to eateries and breweries in outlying areas like Sleeping Bear Dunes and Suttons Bay, the Traverse City restaurant scene has established itself among Michigan foodies as a destination in its own right.

Whether it’s street food, pizza, a classic diner breakfast, or a multi-course tasting menu you want, you’ll find something to satisfy even the pickiest eaters. I’ve lived here long enough to curate a real list of favorites — and this guide is checked against current openings and closings, because TC lost some beloved names recently.

Family-Friendly Restaurants in Traverse City

Bubba’s

This downtown Traverse City eatery right on East Front Street is a great spot to grab a burger, a beer, and lots of delicious appetizers — not to mention boozy shakes for the over-21 members of the family. Stop in during happy hour for half off all alcohol and appetizers.

Don’s Drive-In
2030 US-31, Traverse City, MI 49685
Milkshakes, burgers, and fries, all ordered right from your car. Head to this classic ’50s diner and eat carhop style — a great spot no matter your age.

Agave Mexican Grill
851 S Garfield Ave, Traverse City, MI 49686
Two locations equal double the deliciousness. This is the casual, family-friendly pick for Mexican food in Traverse City — dine in, or eat on the patio at the South Airport Rd location.

Round’s
1033 E Eighth St, Traverse City, MI 49686
The classic diner breakfast: the friendliest staff, fast service, and delicious food. They’ve been open for over 60 years — and counting.

A unique and delectable experience. Make a reservation and settle in for the five- or seven-course tasting menu — unlike anything else in northern Michigan.

Aerie
100 Grand Traverse Village Blvd, Acme, MI 49610
On the 17th floor of the Grand Traverse Resort and Spa, the dining room overlooks East Bay — the best sunset seat in the area, with cocktails, wine, and starters worth lingering over. Save room for the entrees.

Red Ginger

Mouthwatering Asian cuisine and an intimate atmosphere make this a favorite date-night spot downtown. Share small plates, or just grab sushi to go.

Best Spots for Quick Bites in Traverse City

Brew
108 E Front St, Traverse City, MI 49684
Located in downtown T.C., you can grab coffee, a beer, and light breakfast and lunch items at this cozy spot — it works at any time of day, and the coffee program (now featuring Michigan roaster Madcap) is one of the best downtown.

Centre Street Café
1125 Centre St #3404, Traverse City, MI 49686
You will not find a better sandwich or wrap anywhere. Hours are limited to lunch, but it’s worth planning around — the Campfire Wrap is my absolute favorite.

The Dandy (new in late 2025)
115 E Front St, Traverse City, MI 49684
From the owners of Red Spire Brunch House, this downtown brunch spot opened in the former Green House Café space and runs daily 8am–3pm. The Front Street brunch slot is in good hands again.

The Little Fleet
448 E Front St, Traverse City, MI 49686
A downtown must with outdoor seating. With a rotating lineup of food trucks (May–Sep) and a taco shop year-round, everyone finds something at Little Fleet. Grab a drink at the bar and a seat on the big patio.

Slabtown Burger

Your #1 northern Michigan burger and a true local favorite: hand-pattied burgers, fresh-cut fries, and a shake. Grab it to go or eat on the patio.

The coolest place downtown to grab a slice, with a rooftop space to eat it. An incredible variety of artisan pizzas — picking a favorite is the hard part.

Taproot Cider House

A downtown cider house with flatbreads, salads, and appetizers, plus a long list of ciders and craft cocktails. Locally sourced ingredients and plenty of vegetarian and vegan options.

Rare Bird Brewpub
229 Lake Ave, Traverse City, MI 49684
My favorite restaurant in all of Traverse City — delicious brews, food, and atmosphere, with a year-round patio. Expect a wait at peak times (worth it), and try the Rosé the Riveter if you’re a fan of blonde ales.

Workshop Brewing Company
221 Garland St, Traverse City, MI 49684
Another Warehouse District favorite, with burgers, mac and cheese, and sides from Archie’s Food Truck, a big beer selection, and a packed events calendar from open mic to trivia and live music.

More Don’t-Skip Restaurants in Traverse City

Mama Lu’s (final summer — see note)
149 E Front St, Traverse City, MI 49684
The modern-day taco shop: unique tacos, delicious sides, and margaritas, finished with a chocolate-drizzled churro. Go this summer: the owners have announced Mama Lu’s will convert to a fast-casual Asian concept called Happy Cat in fall 2026, so this is the last season for the tacos.

7 Monks Taproom
128 S Union St, Traverse City, MI 49684
The spot to grab a burger and a Michigan-made beer — start with the homemade pretzel bites. Also the unofficial MSU bar of TC (Go Green!).

H&L Social
263 W Grandview Pkwy, Traverse City, MI 49684
A rooftop bar atop Hotel Indigo in the Warehouse District, with exceptional cocktails and a wide range of small plates overlooking West Bay.

Red Spire Brunch House
800 Cottageview Drive Suite #30 Mercato, Main Entrance, Traverse City, MI 49684
My favorite Sunday brunch in all of TC, in the Village at Grand Traverse Commons — budget-friendly, too. You MUST get a homemade cinnamon roll (large enough to split, but you may not want to).

This Suttons Bay farm-to-table eatery offers lunch and dinner and never disappoints. A European-style bistro in a red, century-old farmhouse — some of the best dining in the region.

Traverse City Restaurants That Have Closed

Traverse City’s dining scene turned over quickly in 2025–2026, and several spots from earlier versions of this guide are gone. Blue Tractor closed in August 2025 after 19 years of BBQ on Union Street, vegan coffee shop Hexenbelle closed the same season, and Green House Café closed after two decades, with new brunch spot The Dandy now in its Front Street space. We keep this list current so you don’t drive across town to a locked door.
