Breweries Near New Buffalo Michigan: Beer Church, Ghost Isle & More
Last Updated: April 2026
New Buffalo sits at Exit 1 off I-94 — the literal first stop in Michigan from Indiana — and the craft beer scene here has grown into one of the best reasons to pull off the highway even if the beach wasn’t already calling. Between downtown New Buffalo, Bridgman, Sawyer, and a quick cross into Indiana, there are more serious breweries within 20 minutes of each other than most people expect from a small beach town.
I’ve spent a lot of time working through this list. Here are the breweries worth planning your day around — organized by location, with the specific beers and details that actually help you decide where to go.
📌 In a Nutshell
- Best overall experience: Beer Church Brewing Co. — downtown New Buffalo, world-class Neapolitan pizza, beer garden, brunch on weekends
- Best patio views: Ghost Isle Brewery — wetlands and Galien River views, live music Fridays, family-owned
- Best for serious beer geeks: Transient Artisan Ales — small-batch, experimental, barrel-aged; limited hours so check before you go
- Best with food: Greenbush Brewing Co. (Southern BBQ) or Beer Church (Napoletana pizza)
- Worth the short drive: Haymarket Taproom (Bridgman), Silver Harbor Brewing (St. Joseph), Watermark Brewing (Stevensville)

New Buffalo Breweries

Beer Church Brewing Co.
Beer Church is the anchor of the New Buffalo brewery scene and genuinely one of the most distinctive brewery experiences in southwest Michigan. The setting is a beautifully restored Civil War-era church at the corner of US-12 and Whittaker — the crossroads of downtown — and the beer garden out back has been called one of the best in the Midwest. The 21+ Upper Deck with Michigan’s largest outdoor bar, the covered family patio, and the outdoor pizza kitchen all run full service.
The pizza is Napoletana-style, trained under NYC master pizzaiolo Roberto Caporuscio — the dough fermented fresh daily. The Seraphim Saison (Belgian-style, fruity esters and peppery spice) is the flagship beer, and Pontius Pilate is the IPA regulars keep ordering. Brunch runs Saturday and Sunday from 8 AM. I’ll be honest: the beer garden on a warm Friday evening is worth the visit even before you factor in the pizza.
Pro Tip: The wood-fired pizza is best in the beer garden on a warm evening — order the Napoletana and give it time to cool slightly before you dig in.

Ghost Isle Brewery
Ghost Isle opened in 2019 and has become New Buffalo’s other essential brewery stop. The 230-seat brewpub sits on 3.5 acres between US-12 and the Galien River marsh — the patio views over the wetlands are genuinely great, and you can watch the Amtrak train pass about 50 yards away, which is oddly satisfying. Named for a local legend about a haunted island in the marsh, the place has a personality that’s specific to this town.
Award-winning brewer Dale Vanderaa runs a rotating tap list covering IPAs, lagers, stouts, Belgians, and seasonal releases — all brewed on site on a 10-barrel system. The New Buffalo Pilsner is the approachable entry point; Stoner’s Paradise (hazy, juicy, minimal bitterness) is what the regulars are usually drinking. Live music runs Fridays. The scratch pub menu — burgers, wood-fired pizza, locally inspired dishes — is better than it needs to be.

Bridgman & Sawyer Breweries
Transient Artisan Ales
Transient is the brewery on this list that serious craft beer people get most excited about. Small-batch, experimental, and heavily barrel-aged — DRAFT Magazine named them a Top 25 Brewery on the Rise, and the reputation has only grown. The Barrel-Aged Triangulation Imperial Stout is the flagship: oak-aged, rich with chocolate, coffee, and vanilla, and exactly the kind of beer you sit with rather than session through.
One important note: Transient is closed Monday and Tuesday, and opens at 4 PM Wednesday and Thursday. Check the current schedule before you make the drive — hours here are more limited than the other stops on this list.

Haymarket Taproom
A spacious brewpub right on Red Arrow Highway in Bridgman with craft beer, good food, and a comfortable room for a longer afternoon. The Mathias Imperial IPA is the standout pour — tropical fruit and pine with a solid malt backbone. Easy to combine with a Transient visit since they’re about a mile apart.

Greenbush Brewing Company
About 10 minutes north in Sawyer, Greenbush built its reputation on high-ABV, bold craft beers — Anger, a robust American Black Ale with citrusy hops and a rich malt backbone, is the one that put them on the map. The Southern-style BBQ food program is the other reason to go — brisket, pulled pork, smoked chicken with proper sides. One caveat worth knowing: they don’t smoke meats every day. Call ahead if BBQ is the main reason you’re making the drive.

St. Joseph & Stevensville Breweries
Silver Harbor Brewing Company
A neighborhood brewery in downtown St. Joseph with a cozy atmosphere and an approachable tap list. The Beach Blonde Ale is the easy-drinking crowd-pleaser — light, a little citrusy, and exactly what you want after a day at Lake Michigan. Easy to pair with a walk along the St. Joe bluff and downtown dining.

Watermark Brewing Company
In Stevensville, about 20 minutes north of New Buffalo — the Beach Cruiser IPA is the flagship, a hop-forward pour with tropical and citrus flavors that’s become a southwest Michigan summer staple. The taproom is comfortable and low-key, and the location works well as a midpoint stop if you’re heading toward St. Joseph.

Round Barn Brewery & Public House — Baroda
Round Barn Brewery & Public House
About 15 minutes inland in Baroda, Round Barn operates out of a restored turn-of-the-century Amish round barn and is part of the larger Moersch Hospitality Group that includes Tabor Hill and Free Run Cellars. The Kölsch — light, crisp, and clean — is the easy entry point, but the full tap list covers plenty of ground. Live music runs every weekend May through October. Worth combining with a wine trail stop at Tabor Hill or Dablon since they’re all within a few miles.

Just Over the Indiana Border
Burn ‘Em Brewing
About 15 minutes southwest in Michigan City, Indiana — worth the short cross-border drive. The CoCoa-nut I-PA is the signature beer: an IPA with toasted coconut that adds a tropical note without tipping into dessert territory. A fun stop if you’re doing a full Harbor Country beer day and want to extend the route into Indiana.
