Visit Holland State Park Beach

Holland State Park is one of Michigan’s most popular beach destinations — and once you arrive, you’ll understand why. Located where Lake Macatawa meets Lake Michigan, this wide, sandy beach is perfect for swimming, sunbathing, and soaking up incredible lake views.

There’s plenty to do here beyond the water. You’ll find concession stands, sand volleyball courts, a basketball court, a huge playground, and shaded picnic areas for relaxing or grabbing lunch. It’s a great spot to spend the whole day.

Local tip: Holland State Park has excellent ADA accessibility, with paved walkways, beach access mats, and an inclusive playground. If you’re looking for more accessible Lake Michigan shoreline, Grand Haven State Park — just a short drive north — is another great option.

Spend a Day at Tunnel Park

Tunnel Park is one of my favorite first stops in Holland — a 22-acre park with a gorgeous Lake Michigan beach that’s perfect for swimming, playing, and relaxing on the sand.

What makes it extra fun (especially for kids!) is the tunnel carved through the sand dunes that leads right to the beach. You’ll also find sand volleyball courts, a shaded picnic area, clean restrooms, and a great playground.

I love packing a picnic and spending the whole afternoon here. With plenty of space to roam and grills available, it’s an easy, laid-back beach day spot for the whole family.

Climb Mount Pisgah for a Stunning View

If you’re up for a bit of a workout, the climb up Mount Pisgah is absolutely worth it. The trail features a long wooden boardwalk and nearly 200 steps leading to the top of the dune — 157 feet above Lake Michigan.

Once you reach the overlook, you’ll be rewarded with one of the best panoramic views in the area. From up there, you can see Lake Macatawa, Lake Michigan, and even the iconic Big Red Lighthouse in the distance. It’s one of my favorite spots for photos, especially at sunset.

There are benches and viewing platforms at the top and along the way, so take your time and enjoy the scenery.

Visit “Big Red” Lighthouse

If you’ve seen photos of Holland, chances are you’ve spotted Big Red. This bright red lighthouse is one of the most photographed lighthouses in Michigan — and for good reason. It’s bold, beautiful, and makes for the perfect Lake Michigan backdrop.

You can view Big Red from across the Black River at Holland State Park. I always recommend walking out along the pier if the weather’s calm — it’s one of the best spots to snap your own postcard-worthy photo. Whether you catch it at sunset or with waves crashing behind it, Big Red never disappoints.

Visit the Holland Farmers Market

The Holland Farmers Market is not a limited one: alongside heaps of produce fresh from surrounding farms, you’ll find so many more homemade goods. This is one of my favorite places to visit, and it offers a refreshing break from tourism.

From lively street music to armfuls of flowers to fresh produce, there really is something for everyone at the popular farmer’s market.

Dutch Heritage & Tulips

Tour Windmill Island Gardens

No visit to Holland is complete without stopping at Windmill Island Gardens. This 36-acre park is home to De Zwaan — the only authentic Dutch windmill operating in the United States. Built in 1761, it was the last windmill allowed to leave the Netherlands and still grinds grain into flour today.

The grounds feature over 175,000 tulips in spring, an antique Dutch carousel, a street organ gifted by the City of Amsterdam, and beautiful gardens that bloom all season long. You can tour all five floors of the windmill for stunning views of the park.

Local tip: Plan at least 2 hours for your visit. During Tulip Time, the parking lot fills quickly — consider parking downtown and taking the shuttle on weekends.

Explore Veldheer Tulip Gardens

Veldheer is Holland’s only tulip farm — and it’s spectacular during peak bloom. What started in 1950 with just a few hundred tulip bulbs has grown into over 5 million tulips spread across acres of fields, windmills, drawbridges, and canals.

Beyond the flowers, you can watch craftsmen carve wooden shoes and paint traditional Delftware pottery at the on-site factory — the only one of its kind in the U.S. It’s a great spot for garden lovers and anyone who wants to bring a piece of Holland home.

Experience the Tulip Time Festival

The Tulip Time Festival is Holland’s biggest event — and one of the largest flower festivals in the United States. Since 1929, the city has celebrated spring with millions of tulips, Dutch Dancers in traditional costumes, spectacular parades, and entertainment for all ages.

Experience Nelis Dutch Village

Nelis’ Dutch Village is one of those places that’s just pure fun — especially if you’re visiting with kids. It’s part theme park, part cultural experience, with mini roller coasters, traditional Dutch food, and even a petting zoo.

I love wandering the cobblestone paths, watching wooden shoes being made by hand, and learning about the Dutch traditions that shaped Holland. If the weather’s not cooperating — or you just want a break from the beach — the Holland Community Aquatic Center is a fun indoor option. It’s more than just a pool; there’s a full waterpark-style play area, lap lanes, fitness facilities, and even a lazy river.

My favorite part? The giant water play structure that’s a hit with kids (and let’s be honest, adults too). It’s a great stop for families or anyone looking to get in a swim, rain or shine.

Walk (or Sled!) Through Van Raalte Farm Park

Kollen Park is one of my go-to spots when I want to relax by the water. This 30-acre waterfront park sits along Lake Macatawa and offers scenic views, plenty of open green space, and wide paved walkways perfect for a stroll.

You’ll also find the Queretaro Fountain and the Immigrant Statue — both beautiful nods to Holland’s cultural ties. It’s a peaceful, easy-to-enjoy spot whether you’re picnicking, walking the dog, or just watching the boats go by.

Explore Downtown Holland and Shop 8th Street

Downtown Holland has a charm that’s hard to resist. With tulip-lined streets in the spring, cozy lights in the winter, and something always happening in between, it’s one of my favorite places to spend a few hours — or a full day.

8th Street is the heart of it all. This brick-paved stretch is lined with boutique shops, cafés, breweries, and restaurants, all wrapped in a warm, small-town feel. From live music and outdoor patios in the summer to holiday shopping in December, there’s always a reason to stop and stay awhile.

Unique Local Experiences

Pick Fresh Blueberries at Bowerman Farm

There’s nothing quite like the taste of a sun-warmed blueberry straight off the bush — and Bowerman Blueberry Farm is one of my favorite summer stops in Holland. If you’re visiting in July or August, you can head out into the fields and pick your own blueberries by the bucketful.

Not in the mood to pick? No problem. Their farm market has fresh-picked berries, homemade blueberry donuts, smoothies, baked goods, and more. I never leave without grabbing a little treat (or two) for the road.

Get Out On Lake Michigan on a Holland Boat Tour

One of the best ways to experience Holland is from the water — and there are plenty of ways to do it. For a relaxing cruise, I highly recommend booking a dinner ride on the Holland Princess, a paddlewheel boat that glides through Lake Macatawa and into Lake Michigan. It’s peaceful, scenic, and a great option for date night or a special family outing.

If you’re looking for something more adventurous, you can rent jet skis, kayaks, or paddleboards from local outfitters. I’ve spent entire afternoons out on the lake and honestly, once you’re out there, you won’t want to come back in.

Attend the Kerstmarkt Holiday Market

If you’re visiting Holland during the holidays, don’t miss the Kerstmarkt — a charming outdoor European-style Christmas market held in downtown Holland. “Kerstmarkt” means “Christmas market” in Dutch, and this one has been a beloved tradition since 1997.

Local artisans and farmers set up wooden booths offering everything from handmade wool mittens and ornaments to traditional Dutch treats like banket (almond pastry), stroopwafels, and speculaas cookies. Sip warm glühwein, watch artisan demonstrations, and enjoy carolers in Dickens attire.

The atmosphere is festive, welcoming, and full of holiday spirit — it’s a must-do if you’re in town during November or December.

Tour the Beautiful Grounds of Hope College

Even if you’re not college-hunting, a stroll through the campus at Hope College is worth your time. Founded in 1851 by Dutch immigrants, this private liberal arts college is a big part of Holland’s heritage.

The campus is beautifully maintained with lush green lawns, colorful flower beds, and stately ivy-covered buildings. I’ve wandered through many times, and it always feels peaceful and inspiring — especially in the spring and fall.

Grab a Bite and a Pint at Hops at 84 East

If you love craft beer and creative food, Hops at 84 East is a must-visit. This downtown taproom has an impressive 65 beers on tap, featuring some of the best brews from across Michigan and beyond.

I like to come hungry, because the food menu is just as good. Don’t skip the Duck Potstickers or the Flatbread Funghi — they’re our go-to favorites and perfect for sharing.

Belly Up to The Itty Bitty Bar

Don’t let the name — or the dive bar vibe — fool you. The Itty Bitty Bar is a local gem with a surprisingly elevated menu. Sure, it’s got the classic bar charm, but the food? Totally next level.

We’re talking Wagyu meatloaf, roasted bone marrow, and hands-down some of the best buttermilk fried chicken I’ve had in Michigan. It’s casual, cozy, and always hits the spot — especially after a long beach day.
