15 Best Things to Do in St. Joseph Michigan (2026)
Last Updated: April 2026
The best things to do in St. Joseph, Michigan start at Silver Beach and fan out from there — the 1910-style carousel across the street, the twin North Pier lighthouses on Tiscornia’s side of the river, a walkable bluff-top downtown full of independent shops, a Jack Nicklaus golf course, and a year-round event calendar that runs from the May Blossomtime Festival through Valentine’s Day holiday lights. This guide is the short list of what’s actually worth your time — 15 picks I recommend most often to the people who ask me where to start.

I’ve covered St. Joseph travel on television for FOX 17 West Michigan and WDIV Detroit, and I come back here often enough that I’ve narrowed down what first-time visitors actually need versus the filler. The picks below are grouped into Outdoor & Lake Michigan, In-Town Culture, Seasonal Events, and Food & Drink. If you’re planning the full trip — where to stay, where to eat, itineraries — start with my St. Joseph Michigan travel guide.

Outdoor & Lake Michigan
1. Silver Beach County Park
Silver Beach is the center of gravity for St. Joseph — 2,450 feet of Lake Michigan sand at the mouth of the St. Joseph River, with about 1,600 feet of designated swim area and lifeguards from early June through mid-August. Arrive by mid-morning on summer weekends; the 600-space lot fills. The paved walkways, free beach wheelchairs, and barrier-free access make this the most accessible Lake Michigan beach in the state.
- 📍 Address: 101 Broad Street, St. Joseph, MI 49085 | Berrien County Parks
- ⏰ Hours: Dawn to dusk, year-round
- 💰 Parking: $8 Berrien County residents / $15 non-residents (May–October); $40 annual permit
- ♿ Accessibility: Free beach wheelchairs, barrier-free walkways
- 🐕 Dog policy: Not on sand; leashed dogs on sidewalks and pier
For the full comparison of all seven area beaches, see my St. Joseph beaches guide.

2. North Pier Lighthouses and Tiscornia Park
The twin North Pier lighthouses — the Inner Light (a round structure mid-pier) and the Outer Light (a 35-foot tower at the end) — were built in 1907 and are connected by an elevated catwalk. They’re one of the most photographed scenes on the Lake Michigan shoreline. Access is from Tiscornia Park on the north side of the river; the pier walk is about a quarter-mile each way. In January and early February, the lights freeze into dramatic ice sculptures — a real draw for photographers if you can handle the cold. More in my Lake Michigan lighthouses guide and Michigan frozen lighthouses guide.
- 📍 Access via: Tiscornia Park, 80 Ridgeway Street, St. Joseph, MI 49085 | Visit Southwest Michigan
- ⏰ Hours: Park open dawn to dusk
- 💰 Cost: Seasonal parking fee; free to walk in
- ♿ Accessibility: ADA-accessible sidewalk to the beach; the pier walk itself is not wheelchair-accessible
3. Harbor Shores Golf Course
The only Jack Nicklaus Signature public course on Lake Michigan, Harbor Shores in Benton Harbor is a six-minute drive from downtown St. Joseph and since 2012 has been the biennial host of the KitchenAid Senior PGA Championship. The 18 holes run through sand dunes with three Lake Michigan-view holes, nine holes along the Paw Paw River and Ox Creek wetlands, and six holes through hardwood forest and ravines. Each tee has a metal sculpture with hand-blown glass commemorating one of Nicklaus’s major championships.

4. Sarett Nature Center
Just north of Benton Harbor, Sarett Nature Center is 1,000+ acres of protected land with eight miles of trails through marshes, wetlands, hardwood forest, and the bluffs above the Paw Paw River. The treetop walkway elevates you above the forest floor — spectacular in fall when the canopy turns. Trails are open dawn to dusk every day; the nature center and butterfly house are closed Mondays. Pets aren’t allowed on the trails, but accessible all-terrain vehicles are available to reserve.

The one-stop rental shop in downtown St. Joseph. Scooter Joe’s rents surrey bikes, beach cruisers, tandems, fat-tire bikes, electric bikes, kayaks, canoes, pontoon boats, and street-legal low-speed golf carts. It’s also where to grab beach chairs, umbrellas, wagons, and strollers without hauling your own. Walking distance from The Boulevard Inn and Silver Beach Hotel.

After 20 years in retail, the Third Coast Surf Shop storefront has closed — but Third Coast Paddling still operates hourly kayak and stand-up paddleboard rentals at St. Joseph, New Buffalo, Warren Dunes, and Douglas, and their Great Lakes surf lessons and kids’ beach day camps continue each summer. Details at thirdcoastsurfshop.com.

In-Town Family & Culture
7. Whirlpool Compass Fountain (Splash Pad)
The compass-rose splash pad inside Silver Beach County Park is free, public, and the thing most kids under ten will ask about before you leave. Timed water jets, wide open paved space to run, and it’s a five-minute walk from the carousel and Silver Beach itself — which is why the whole block functions as one family destination.
- 📍 Address: 200 Broad Street, St. Joseph, MI 49085 (inside Silver Beach County Park)
- ⏰ Active season: Summer; typically runs into early fall
- 💰 Cost: Free (parking fee applies at Silver Beach)

8. Silver Beach Carousel
The current Silver Beach Carousel opened on January 2, 2010, rebuilt to honor the original 1910 Silver Beach Amusement Park carousel. It has 48 unique hand-carved menagerie figures and two chariots (the original had 44 horses), 1,000 twinkling lights, and 18 rounding boards telling Berrien County history. Open year-round, genuinely charming, and the Serpent Chariot is wheelchair-accessible.
- 📍 Address: 333 Broad Street, St. Joseph, MI 49085 | silverbeachcarousel.com
- 📞 Phone: (269) 932-1141
- ⏰ Hours: Open all four seasons — confirm day-of hours online
- ♿ Accessibility: Serpent Chariot is wheelchair-accessible
9. Curious Kids’ Discovery Zone
Inside the Silver Beach Center at 333 Broad Street next to the carousel, the Discovery Zone has water activities, a climbing wall, virtual reality, and rotating hands-on exhibits. Designed for kids 2 to roughly 10, though bigger kids and adults enjoy the VR.

10. Krasl Art Center
The Krasl Art Center is free, year-round, and houses rotating exhibitions plus a permanent public sculpture collection with works by Dale Chihuly, Richard Hunt, and George Rickey placed throughout the campus and the wider community. In July it hosts the Krasl Art Fair on the Bluff — the 64th edition runs July 11–12, 2026 and draws collectors from across the Midwest. Free shuttles run from St. Joseph High School parking the weekend of the fair.
- 📍 Address: 707 Lake Blvd, St. Joseph, MI 49085 | krasl.org
- 💰 Cost: Free admission; Art Fair is donation-based
- 📅 2026 Art Fair: July 11 (9 AM–6 PM) & July 12 (10 AM–5 PM)
11. Box Factory for the Arts
The Box Factory for the Arts is a converted paper factory with more than 50,000 square feet of artist studios, galleries, a performance stage, an art shop, and classrooms. Operated by the Berrien Artist Guild. If Krasl is polish, this is process — a good place to see working artists and grab an affordable original piece.
12. Lake Bluff Park
Lake Bluff Park runs along the top of the bluff parallel to the downtown shopping district and above Silver Beach — it’s the best lake-view free stop in town. The John E.N. Howard Bandshell hosts the St. Joseph Municipal Band concerts in summer. A war memorial, sculpture from Krasl’s public collection, and tree-lined paths make it the natural spot for a walk between downtown shopping and the beach. On the first Sunday of each month from May through October, Antiques on the Bluff fills the park with 50+ vendors (10 AM–5 PM, free admission).

13. Explore Downtown St. Joseph
Downtown St. Joseph runs along State Street and Broad Street on the bluff. It’s boutiques, bookshops, independent galleries, and specialty food — no chain filler. My regular stops: Kilwin’s for fudge (512 Pleasant Street), the Chocolate Café for handmade chocolates (300 State Street), Forever Books (an independent bookstore), The Toy Company, and any of the rotating art galleries along State. Plan at least a full afternoon.
14. John & Dede Howard Ice Arena
A covered, refrigerated NHL-sized outdoor ice rink in downtown St. Joseph. Open for public skating in winter, it’s the rare indoor/outdoor hybrid that lets you skate outside without fully committing to the weather. Skate rentals available. A fun rainy-or-snowy-day option if you’re staying downtown.
Seasonal Events and Festivals
15. Blossomtime Festival (Early May)
Michigan’s oldest multi-community festival, Blossomtime has run since 1906 and kicks off the season. The 2026 Grand Floral Parade is Saturday, May 9, with 120+ units traveling 2½ miles through St. Joseph across the Bicentennial Bridge into Benton Harbor. The Youth Parade runs Saturday, May 2 along State Street.
Krasl Art Fair on the Bluff (July 11–12, 2026)
The 64th annual fair — one of the best-regarded juried art fairs in the Midwest — takes over Lake Bluff Park the second weekend of July. Saturday 9 AM–6 PM, Sunday 10 AM–5 PM, donation-based admission, free shuttles from St. Joseph High School.
Chalk the Block (Early August)
Artists take over Broad Street in downtown St. Joseph for a weekend of street-chalk art. Amateur and professional artists work live, there’s a Chalk Kids Zone for children, and admission is free. Historically the first weekend in August — confirm current-year dates before you go.
Luminary Lakefront (Mid-November through Valentine’s Day)
Lake Bluff Park transforms into a 1,000,000+ light walking display every winter — a legitimate destination holiday attraction, not just a municipal effort. Free admission, donations support the display. Extended season runs through Valentine’s Day, which makes it one of the few Michigan light shows still up after New Year’s.
- 📍 Location: Lake Bluff Park, 300 Lake Blvd, St. Joseph
- 📅 Dates: Mid-November through Valentine’s Day
- 💰 Cost: Free admission
Food, Wine, and Drinks
Food is a real part of St. Joseph’s draw. The highlights: Silver Beach Pizza inside the active century-old Amtrak depot; Bistro on the Boulevard for upscale seasonal American; Silver Harbor Brewing (721 Pleasant Street) for craft beer; and The Market at 301 Main Street, a year-round indoor farmers market with food stalls. For Lake Michigan Shore Wine Trail wineries, start at White Pine Winery‘s downtown tasting room and work inland toward Baroda. The full breakdown is in my St. Joseph restaurants guide and my southwest Michigan wineries guide.
Where to Stay
The short list: The Boulevard Inn & Bistro (521 Lake Blvd — all-suite, perched on the bluff, five-minute walk to Silver Beach) for location; The Inn at Harbor Shores for golf and resort amenities; Silver Beach Hotel for budget-friendly walkable. Full breakdown in my best hotels in St. Joseph MI guide.
Nearby Day Trips
St. Joseph works well as a base for the wider southwest Michigan coast. Within an hour: Warren Dunes State Park (20 min south for the dunes and broader beach), New Buffalo (40 min south, closer to Chicago), South Haven (35 min north for the Big Red lighthouse), and Saugatuck-Douglas (55 min north for galleries and Oval Beach).
