There’s a lot to do and see on your first day in GR, so you’re going to want to power up at one of Michigan’s best coffee shops. Start the day off right at this popular Grand Rapids coffee house (now with multiple locations throughout Michigan). Grab a quick latte and light breakfast of pastries from local vendors. Try the sourdough toast with butter and jam – you’ll thank me later.

After you’ve had your breakfast, it’s an easy 10-minute walk across the Grand River bridge to this three-story museum packed with interesting exhibits. This is truly one of my favorite museums in West Michigan, and not just because they have a real merry-go-round from 1928 that you can ride.

Lunch at the B.O.B.

Any trip to Grand Rapids is not complete without a stop at the BOB, which stands for “Big Old Building.” A downtown Grand Rapids landmark, this four-story building was formerly a grocery warehouse, and was built in 1920.

Now, it’s a local hotspot for Grand Rapids dining and entertainment, featuring multiple bars, restaurants and it’s very own comedy club. For lunch, I suggest Bobarino’s, where you can split a wood -fired pizza (I like the roasted peppers and Italian sausage) and get ready for your next adventure.

Address: 1 Ionia Ave SW Ste 100, Grand Rapids, MI 49503

After you leave the BOB, you’re just a block away from the oldest brewing company in the city. Grand Rapids Brewing Company is your first stop on the ‘Beer City Ale Trail.” With more than 40 craft breweries with a 30-minute drive, and many in Grand Rapids with walking distance, you’ll want to pace yourself and proceed carefully as you sample the delicious brews and ciders.

You’ll want to visit Brewery Vivant, located in a former funeral home, and New Holland Brewing – Knickerbocker, a sprawling brewpub with full line of craft beer and spirits, small-batch pub brews, and handcrafted cocktails, too.

HopCat- Enjoy Local Vibes

By now, you’ll really need some food in your stomach. Finish your afternoon at HopCat, where you can sip on a Michigan craft beer of your choice will you snack on their signature Cosmik Fries, once known as “Crack fries”, because they are so addicting, or a giant soft pretzel with beer cheese. They also have a full menu, including my favorite, a Brisket Taco with BBQ sauce and red onions.
