The best Michigan winter resorts split into two kinds: ski resorts with a spa and a pool for the people who don’t ski, and indoor waterpark hotels where nobody has to go outside at all. I ski, my son and daughter snowboard, and my husband would rather hike, so I’ve sorted the ten below by what they’re for and what a night starts at, from a $90 beachfront inn in Mackinaw City to Boyne Mountain’s lodge attached to the biggest indoor waterpark in the state.

Here’s how I’d choose. If anyone in your group is going to ski, book one of the three ski resorts and let the non-skiers have the spa and the pool; you’ll never get the skiers to a waterpark hotel on a snow day. If nobody skis, Frankenmuth gives you two waterpark hotels and a town to walk around, Great Wolf gives you the biggest waterpark near Traverse City’s restaurants, and Soaring Eagle is the one that takes your dog. The two outliers, Marina Grand and Fairview, are for a quiet weekend rather than a splashy one. One honest note: none of these is cheap on a holiday weekend, and the ski resorts sell out Christmas week by October.

EXPERT TIP: Northern Michigan’s ski resorts open the first week of December and most close in late March, with January typically offering the best snow conditions. Book weekends and holidays several months in advance; these resorts fill up fast. Why I Like It: What I like best about Crystal Mountain Resort is that the 59 downhill ski runs vary in difficulty, so skiers of different abilities can all have a good time. I’m not a great skier, so I stick to the green and blue runs, but there’s a terrain park for the more advanced ski and snowboard crowd. Mountain safety is a priority, and Crystal offers both private and group lessons for adults and kids alike.

Why I Like It: There is so much to do within steps of the Mountain Grand Lodge that both kids and adults will enjoy, including walking across Skybridge Michigan, the world’s tallest timber-towered suspension bridge. During winter, SkyBridge is tricked out with more than 150,000 twinkle lights for an immersive light experience. I just love the view here, and the lights in winter make it extra special.

Budget-Friendly Adventure: Shanty Creek & Great Wolf Lodge

Shanty Creek Resort – Bellaire

With over 275 lodging options across 5,500 acres, there really is something for every family size and budget at Shanty Creek Resort. This is our winter go-to ever since my kids learned to ski here years ago on the Greenway run at Summit Mountain. Summit is alpine tubing only now; all the downhill skiing is at Schuss Mountain, with 42 runs and night skiing Wednesday through Saturday.

Shanty Creek’s three villages and lodges (Schuss Mountain Lodge, Cedar Village Lodge, and the Lakeview Hotel) all have indoor pools or hot tubs as well as dining and shopping on premise. The snow tubing park is one of the best in the state, in my opinion.

Why I Like It: Shanty Creek and Schuss Mountain are very versatile if you have skiers and non-skiers in your party. Not only do they offer a great beginner Michigan ski experience, but the equipment rental service here is excellent. They can outfit ages 13+ and kids ages 12 and under, so if you don’t have your own skis or snowboard, you’re covered.
