If you’re anything like me, summer in Michigan means road‑tripping to sandy beaches, wandering charming lake towns, catching a sunset over the water, and discovering unexpected hidden gems along the way.

Whether you’ve visited before or this is your very first summer exploring my home state, this guide will help you plan a Michigan summer getaway that’s as beautiful as it is welcoming—for every traveler, including those needing ADA‑friendly amenities and those bringing a four‑legged travel buddy.

Michigan has it all—from sparkling freshwater beaches along the Great Lakes to vibrant cities and peaceful wilderness spots. With more than 3,000 miles of Great Lakes coastline, endless inland lakes, and forests to hike, there is something for everyone.

Whether you’re chasing stunning sunsets, family fun, or quiet moments by the water, Michigan delivers. The sweet smell of cherry orchards, amazing craft brews, and the cool evenings of a Michigan summer create a magical backdrop for every traveler.

How I Choose a Great Summer Getaway

  • Summer-ready amenities: parking, restrooms, paved paths.
  • Accessibility first—paths, viewpoints, and beach access for everyone. Frequently, we bring my mom along with us when we travel, and we want her to be able to experience everyting and be comfortable while traveling!

Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore

With towering golden dunes, sparkling turquoise waters, and miles of scenic trails, Sleeping Bear Dunes is the kind of place that stays with you long after you leave. It’s no wonder this stretch of the Lake Michigan shoreline is considered one of America’s most beautiful destinations.

Why I love it: From cruising the Pierce Stocking Scenic Drive with its jaw-dropping overlooks, to catching a quiet sunset at Empire Beach, Sleeping Bear is a place I can return to again and again—and always see something new.

Getting There: Located about 40 minutes west of Traverse City, the park is best accessed via US-31 and M-22—one of the most scenic coastal drives in the country. Plan extra time for photo stops along the way.

ADA Accessibility

  • Dune Climb: A wheelchair-friendly boardwalk leads right to the base of the dunes, so everyone can take in the scale and beauty without climbing.
  • Pierce Stocking Scenic Drive: Several overlooks and picnic spots have accessible parking and paved viewing areas.
  • Glen Haven Historic Village: The General Store and Maritime Museum both have wheelchair-accessible entrances.

Dog-Friendly Notes

  • Leashed dogs are welcome on most beaches north of Esch Road and south of Peterson Road—perfect for a splash in the shallows or a long shoreline walk.
  • Dogs are not allowed in the Dune Climb area or on certain trails to protect sensitive wildlife habitats, so check signage before heading out.

Stay Nearby

Base yourself in Glen Arbor or Empire, where you’ll find cozy cabins, classic motels, and pet-friendly vacation rentals. These spots book up fast in July and August, so reserve early if you can.

Known as the Cherry Capital, Traverse City blends small‑town charm with foodie energy. You’ll find some of Michigan’s top breweries and wineries in the area, too, including Chateau Chantal and Black Star Farms, two of my favorites. Rent a bike and ride along Grand Traverse Bay, or take a ride up Old Mission Peninsula to the Grand Traverse Lighthouse for a fabulous weekend getaway in Michigan.

Must‑Do:

  • Stroll the ADA‑friendly Boardman Lake Trail.
  • Sample wine at a downtown tasting room.
  • Have lunch at a dog‑friendly patio like The Filling Station.

Events:

Lodging: Multiple hotels with ADA‑compliant rooms near the waterfront. Many rental homes allow dogs with a small fee.

Mackinac Island

No cars. Just bicycles, horses, and incredible views. Mackinac Island is conveniently situated between the upper and lower peninsula in the middle of Lake Huron. It’s the gem of Michigan travel, a beautiful Victorian-era still filled with natural beauty. Grab a ferry from Mackinaw City or St. Ignace to get to the island.

Then, hike, rent and bike or take a horse-drawn carriage ride around the island where you’ll see unique sights like Arch Rock, Skull Cave and the Grand Hotel. Spend some time wandering the downtown shops and of course, taste the sugary-sweet, world famous Mackinac Island fudge. It’s one of the best romantic getaways in Michigan, but your family and your family will love it too.

Getting There:

  • Ferries from Mackinaw City or St. Ignace—both ADA‑accessible. Bring your dog on board free with a leash.

ADA Accessibility:

  • The main downtown is flat and paved.
  • Several hotels, including the Grand Hotel and Mission Point Resort, have accessible entries and rooms.

Dog‑Friendly:

  • Dogs welcome on ferries, most outdoor patios, and trails outside of state park nature preserves.

  • Grand Haven State Park offers ADA‑compliant restrooms and beach mats for wheelchair access to the shoreline.

Dog Tips:

  • Harbor Trolley allows leashed dogs on designated rides during summer weekends.

  • Coast Guard Festival (late July–early August) — accessible bleachers and parade routes.

Lexington

Charming Lexington on Michigan’s “Blue Thumb Coast,” is a quietly beautiful little town tucked away on the shore of Lake Huron. You’ll find a beautiful, downtown beachfront park next to the picturesque marina. Walk the downtown street and be sure to visit the old-fashioned general store. Be sure to make some time to drive north along M25. It follows the Lake Huron coastline, and you can stop at some of the beautiful roadside parks and scenic overlooks.

ADA Acessible: You’ll also find a sandy beach that’s ADA-accessible and a long walkable pier that stretches way out into Lake Huron.

Dog-Friendly: Many spots in town welcome dogs on their patios—just ask and bring your leash!

EXPERT TIP: Lexington is especially peaceful midweek, so plan a weekday trip if you want the beach nearly to yourself.

South Haven

Once you visit South Haven, chances are good that you’ll never want to leave. This is one of Michigan’s perfect beach towns. It’s a mix of gorgeous Lake Michigan shoreline, with a scenic pier and iconic lighthouses.

You’ll find one of the cutest downtown areas around, too, with a good mix of upscale and casual dining and shopping. There’s a big harbor here and the fabulous Michigan Maritime Museum where you can take a ride on a replica 1812 warship as it sails into Lake Michigan. This is a perfect weekend trip, if you have kids, or are looking for a romantic getaway.

ADA-Accessible: South Haven’s downtown and waterfront are designed to be walkable and accessible. Wheelchair-accessible paths lead directly to the beach and pier, and there are ADA-compliant restrooms near the main beach.

Dog-Friendly: Many local patios welcome dogs, and there’s even an off-leash dog beach just north of town where pups can splash in Lake Michigan.

EXPERT TIP: South Haven sunsets are spectacular—plan to grab takeout or a picnic and watch the sun dip below the lake from the end of the pier.

Tiny New Buffalo is set on a pristine stretch of Lake Michigan beach, but don’t let its size fool you: this popular little spot packs a lot of charm and adventure into it. In addition to its pretty lakefront park, you’ll find lots to do here.

It’s a great spot for boating, kayaking, and paddleboarding on the Galien River. You’ll also enjoy browsing the art galleries, boutiques, and ice cream shops that line the downtown, too. You’ll definitely want to pop into Beer Church and some of the other amazing New Buffalo wineries and breweries along the Lake Michigan Shore Wine Trail.

Last-Minute Michigan Summer getaway Ideas

Tahquamenon Falls

Located in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, Tahquamenon Falls is actually a collection of two waterfalls. They’re said to be the largest waterfalls east of the Mississippi, and you’ll have at least that much fun exploring them. This is a must on any Michigan travel bucket list.

You’ll find yourself surrounded by Pure Michigan natural beauty, here, where you can smell the fresh, clean air, and hear the sound of the rushing water. Michigan is home to more than 300 waterfalls and these are some of my favorites.

Hidden Gem: Manistee – First Street Beach & Pier

Manistee offers one of Michigan’s very best beach experiences. Wide sandy shores, calm water (easy for swimming), and great amenities. There’s even a fenced dog park and dedicated dog beach area—so bring your pup along. This lakeshore gem offers wide boardwalk access and picnic areas for a stress-free beach day.

Saugatuck & Mt. Baldhead

A coastal favorite—art galleries, paddle‑wheel tours, a hand‑cranked ferry, and dunes. Saugatucl’s compact layout is pedestrian-friendly and charming, perfect for an easy summer stroll. Plus, it’s super dog-friendly and inclusive!

Oscoda

You’ll find some of the best beaches in Michigan along this stretch of the Lake Huron coastline. Located on Michigan’s sunrise side, Oscoda boasts one of the nicest beachfront parks in Michigan. It’s a sprawling area with an ADA-accessible shoreline, a picturesque pier that stretches out into Lake Huron, and a boardwalk that spans the beachfront.

There are tons of activities for kids here, including a splash pad, play structure, skateboard ramps, basketball court, and more. This is a really beautiful park: well-manicured with clean restrooms and within walking distance to the cute downtown.

Frankenmuth

You’ll never run out of things to do in “Michigan’s Little Bavaria”, Frankenmuth. After you have your world-famous chicken dinner, explore Bronners Christmas wonderland and then wander the shops at River Place. Take a horse-drawn carriage ride around the downtown and then make a visit to Grandpa Tiny’s farm, where you’ll find a petting zoo and a whole host of other fun things to do. You’ll find Zehnder’s Splash Village, a fun indoor waterpark, too.

  • Go during off-peak hours in July/August to avoid clumps at top sites.
  • Check online in advance for ADA access updates or ferry schedules.
  • Bring quick shade and water especially if you’re with kids or pups.
  • Mix nature with local eats—grab a treat in Saugatuck or a picnic in Manistee.
