Where to Stay in Oscoda for Fall Color: 18 Lakefront Cottages, Resorts and Hotels

Oscoda is one of the easiest fall color trips in Michigan to get right, and the reason is the river. The AuSable runs west out of town into the Huron-Manistee National Forest, and the River Road National Scenic Byway follows the north bank with overlooks the whole way. You get hardwood color, water reflecting it back, and a Lake Huron beach town to sleep in — without the Saturday traffic that makes the Tunnel of Trees exhausting in October.

The catch is that Oscoda’s lodging is mostly small, family-run resorts. There is no wall of chain hotels absorbing overflow, and several places close for the season. Book earlier than you think you need to, and check open dates before you drive.

When to Come for Peak Color in Oscoda

Oscoda typically peaks in the second week of October, with the window running roughly October 10 through 17 in an average year. Cold nights pull that earlier and a warm stretch pushes it later, which is what the live card above is tracking.

Two local wrinkles worth knowing. The color inland along the AuSable and up toward Lumberman’s Monument turns several days ahead of the shoreline, because Lake Huron holds summer heat and slows the change right along the water. So if you are here early in the window, drive River Road first and save the beach for the afternoon. And Oscoda’s oaks hold deep russet well after the maples drop, which means a late-October trip is not a wasted one.

💡 PRO TIP: Come on a Tuesday or Wednesday. Oscoda is quiet enough midweek in October that you can have the Lumberman’s Monument overlook to yourself, and the small resorts below are far easier to book. The color is identical.

On the Beach: Lakefront Cottages and Resorts

This is what Oscoda does better than anywhere else on the Sunrise Coast — small family-run resorts sitting directly on Lake Huron sand beaches, most with kitchens, most with grills and fire pits. In October you get the sunrise over the water with nobody else on the beach.

Hotels and Motels: Indoor Pools and Year-Round Rooms

If you are coming late in the season, traveling with kids who need somewhere to burn energy after a day of driving, or you just want a predictable room and a hot breakfast, this is your group. All of these stay open through the fall.

What to Do While the Color Is Up

Drive the River Road National Scenic Byway west along the AuSable and stop at Lumberman’s Monument, where the overlook and stairway down to the river give you the view this trip is for. Iargo Springs is the other stop worth the steps. In town, the Oscoda boardwalk and Oscoda Beach Park are good for a cold-afternoon walk, and the AuSable Pierhead Light is the photo everyone takes.

If you have a second day, Ocqueoc Falls is about an hour north and holds a distinction worth the drive — it is the first universally accessible waterfall in the country, with tiered limestone and transfer platforms that let wheelchair users get into the water. Come in October and the Chinook salmon may be running.
