Michigan Fall Bucket List: The Best Things to Do This Autumn

Hey, friends! If you’re anything like me—a lifelong Michigander who’s spent countless autumns chasing the perfect leaf-peep along Michigan’s shores—you know fall here is pure magic.

The crisp air hits just right, the beaches empty out for peaceful walks, and those vibrant reds and golds light up the coastline like a postcard. I’m talking about the kind of season that calls for cozy sweaters, hot cider in hand, and road trips that end with sandy toes or a hearty pasty.

Welcome to Fall in Michigan

As the founder of MyMichiganBeach.com and a regular on TV spots from Detroit to Grand Rapids, I’ve explored nearly every corner of the Great Lakes State—from sailing my 14-foot dinghy The Lady Celeste through Lake Huron’s fall swells to filming segments on Michigan’s best fall color drives.

Whether you’re a family hunting for kid-friendly fun or a couple seeking scenic getaways, this bucket list highlights my top 25+ fall experiences for 2025, featuring both coastal gems and inland adventures.

👉 Pro Tip: Check my Michigan Fall Color Map for real-time updates. The Upper Peninsula usually peaks in late September, while the Lower Peninsula hits mid-October.

Let’s dive in—grab your keys, a warm drink, and get ready to make some Pure Michigan memories.

No Michigan fall road trip is complete without the legendary Tunnel of Trees along M-119. This 20-mile stretch from Harbor Springs to Cross Village hugs Lake Michigan’s bluffs, creating a canopy of fiery red, orange, and gold leaves overhead.  The narrow road explodes in reds, oranges, and yellows—it’s like driving through a living painting.

Go midweek to skip crowds, and plan a few pull-offs for photos and lake views. Pack a picnic from Toski Sands Market and end your drive at Legs Inn in Cross Village for Polish comfort food and sunset views.

It’s low-key and close to Lake Huron beaches, so I always combine it with a stop at my favorite Oscoda spots. Great for all ages; go in early October for peak colors.

The four-loop pathway winds through hardwood forests bursting with color. I always pair this stop with a quick detour to Oscoda’s beaches or the Iargo Springs for a complete northeast fall road trip.
