Last Updated: August 2026

This Michigan fall color map tracks where the color actually is, week by week, from the first turn in the western Upper Peninsula to the last oaks holding on in southeast Michigan. I update this page through the season with current conditions. 🍂 Michigan Fall Color Status

  • 📍 Where color is now: Nothing has turned yet — Michigan’s season starts in the western Upper Peninsula in late September
  • 🔮 2026 outlook: Near average, with little drought stress heading into fall
  • 💧 Growing conditions: About 2% of Michigan was in active drought as of late July — a favorable setup
  • 🗓️ Detailed 2026 predictions: The national forecast maps refresh at the end of August
  • ⚠️ Road alert: Two sections of M-119, the Tunnel of Trees, are closed to through traffic after April flooding
  • 🔄 Update schedule: Weekly regional reports begin here in September

How Michigan’s Fall Colors Unfold

Michigan’s color moves north to south across roughly four weeks, starting in the coldest northern forests and rolling south at about 15 to 20 miles a day. The one pattern that catches people out: lakeshore towns peak five to ten days after the inland forests beside them, because the Great Lakes hold summer heat and delay the cold nights that trigger the change.

These are the historical windows. They are a planning baseline, not a 2026 forecast.

💡 PRO TIP: Plan a north-to-south trip and you can follow peak color for nearly a full month. Start in the Porkies the last week of September, work down to the Tunnel of Trees mid-October, and finish at a southeast Michigan cider mill in early November.

The 2026 Michigan Fall Color Outlook

The 2026 outlook points to a near-average season, which is the outcome you want — extremes in either direction are what dull the color. The Old Farmer’s Almanac expects near-average peak color across most regions, with Michigan following its usual north-to-south pattern.

The more useful indicator is moisture. As of late July 2026, roughly 2% of Michigan was in active drought and 12% classified as abnormally dry, per the U.S. Drought Monitor. Drought stress is what makes leaves brown and drop early instead of turning, and Michigan is heading into fall without much of it.

Detailed prediction maps refresh at the end of August. Anyone publishing precise 2026 peak dates before then is estimating from historical averages — which is exactly what the table above gives you, without the false precision.

Where to Check Live Fall Color Conditions

Once the season starts, current conditions beat any forecast. I post weekly regional reports on this page from September, and these are the sources I check alongside my own reports:

  • Explore Fall Michigan map — updated daily through the season with regional color stage estimates and local reports
  • Old Farmer’s Almanac foliage map — week-by-week national progression, good for planning months ahead
  • Local TV weather teams — West Michigan and northern Michigan stations run weekly foliage segments through October with viewer photos, which is the closest thing to real-time ground truth

No prediction tool is perfect. As the team behind one of the widely used national maps puts it, the point is not certainty — it is helping travelers improve their odds of hitting peak color.

Where to Go, Week by Week

Short version of where to be as the season moves. Each links to the full guide if you want detail.

Late September: The Western U.P.

Lake of the Clouds in the Porcupine Mountains is the first and best. Old-growth sugar maple reflected in still water, with an accessible boardwalk to the overlook so everyone in your group gets the view.

First Two Weeks of October: The Eastern U.P.

Tahquamenon Falls pairs amber water against gold birch — the best color-and-water combination in the state. Color arrives a few days later in the eastern U.P. than the western, since the change moves from north and west.

💡 PRO TIP: Moving west to east across the Upper Peninsula, stop at Kitch-iti-kipi, Michigan’s Big Spring. Fall color surrounds a clear emerald pond, and the hand-operated raft takes you across 40 feet of water so transparent you can watch the sand boiling up from the bottom.

Second and Third Weeks of October: Northern Michigan

The busiest and best-known window. The Tunnel of Trees on M-119 north of Petoskey and the Pierce Stocking Scenic Drive at Sleeping Bear Dunes are the two everyone drives.

⚠️ 2026 ROAD ADVISORY: April flooding washed out two sections of M-119. The road is closed to through traffic between Terpening Road and Robinson Road near Good Hart, and again between Island View Road and Cross Village. Detours are marked and the businesses along the route are reachable. Check the Petoskey Area closure page before you drive.

Late October: The West Michigan Shoreline

Missed peak up north? The lakeshore is your second chance. Holland and Ludington hold color into late October. Climb Mt. Pisgah in Holland for lake-to-leaf views over Lake Macatawa.

Farther south, Harbor Country and St. Joseph peak last on the Lake Michigan side. Hike the dune trails at Warren Dunes State Park, kayak the Galien River in New Buffalo, then go antiquing in Three Oaks.

Mid to Late October: The Thumb and Mid-Michigan

Frankenmuth, Bay City, and Midland come into color alongside the festivals, cider mills, and pumpkin farms. Frankenmuth runs horse-drawn carriage rides past scarecrows and mums, and Oktoberfest lands September 17–20 in 2026. Port Crescent State Park in the Thumb is the quieter, dune-side alternative.

Fall color change on trees in southeast Michigan

Late October into November: Southeast Michigan

The last color in the state, with oaks holding russet into November. Ann Arbor and the Huron River corridor, plus cider mills and pumpkin patches across the metro.

Drive Edward Hines Drive from Dearborn — home of Greenfield Village and the Henry Ford Museum — out to Plymouth and Northville. There are pull-offs the whole way for a picnic or a walk under the canopy.

Four Rules for Timing It Right

  • Break it into weekends. The U.P. one week, West Michigan two weeks later. Chasing the whole state in one trip means spending your fall in a car.
  • Inland first, lakeshore later. Early October, head inland. Late October, stick to the coasts.
  • Watch the wind, not just the date. Peak lasts one to two weeks, but a single storm can end it overnight. If a front is coming, move your trip up.
  • Past peak is not a wasted trip. Golden fields, bare-branch light, pumpkin farms, and empty trails are their own thing. Add a fall train ride, a corn maze, or a fall festival.

Michigan Fall Color Map: Questions & Answers

Where are Michigan’s fall colors peaking right now?

Michigan’s season has not started yet. The first color appears in the western Upper Peninsula in the last days of September, then moves south at roughly 15 to 20 miles a day, reaching southeast Michigan in late October. I post weekly regional reports on this page starting in September.

What is the 2026 Michigan fall color forecast?

Near average. The Old Farmer’s Almanac expects near-average peak color across most regions, and Michigan entered August with only about 2% of the state in active drought — meaning little of the stress that causes early leaf drop. Detailed prediction maps refresh at the end of August.

When is the best week to see fall color in Michigan?

It depends entirely on where you are going. The western Upper Peninsula peaks late September into the first week of October. Northern Michigan — the Tunnel of Trees, Sleeping Bear, Traverse City — peaks the second and third weeks of October. Southern Michigan runs late October into early November. Lake Michigan shoreline towns run five to ten days behind nearby inland forests.

Is the Tunnel of Trees open for fall 2026?

Partially. April 2026 flooding closed two sections of M-119 to through traffic — between Terpening Road and Robinson Road near Good Hart, and between Island View Road and Cross Village. Marked detours keep the route’s businesses reachable. Check current conditions before you drive.

How accurate are fall color prediction maps?

They are useful for planning a month out and unreliable for picking an exact weekend. Prediction maps blend historical averages with forecast data, but the three weeks before your trip — cool nights, sunshine, wind, and rain — decide the outcome. Use the map to choose your region and week, then check live conditions before you commit.
