Michigan does scenic drives better than almost anywhere in the Midwest, and October is when they earn it. M-22 around the Leelanau Peninsula was voted the nation’s best autumn drive by USA Today 10Best readers. The Tunnel of Trees on M-119 is the most dramatic 20 miles — though two sections are closed to through traffic in 2026, so check before you go.

Cider Mills, Orchards, and Farms

This is the busiest category on the site every October, and for good reason — warm donuts and cold cider is the whole point of a Michigan fall afternoon. Corn maze season starts earlier than people expect, with a few farms opening in late August and most running by mid-September. Nearly everything closes on or just after Halloween.

Festivals, Events, and Train Rides

Festival season runs September through October and peaks earlier than the leaves do. The busiest weekend of the whole season is September 11–13, 2026, when Plymouth, Rochester’s Art & Apples, and the Posen Potato Festival all run at once. Frankenmuth Oktoberfest follows September 17–20.
